Chat with Other Dealers Online!

Parts Magician now allows you to chat and send instant messages to other Parts Magician Subscribers. This new service comes is part of your Parts Magician subscription at no additional cost.

What is Chat?

Chat allows you to talk to other dealers on the Parts Magician Network. Using your computer's speaker and microphone you can talk with dealers who also have a microphone and speaker connected to their computer.

The main benefit is that you don't have to pay for a normal telephone calll.

What is Instant Messaging?

Instant messaging allows you to send text messages to other dealers instantly. So if you or the dealer you wish to talk to do not have a speaker and microphone, you can still converse via Parts Magician using test messages.

One of the benefits of instant messaging is that you can simulatniously hold multiple 'text conversions' with different dealers.

Using Chat and Instant Messaging in Parts Magician

There are several ways to start a chat session with another dealer.

One is to select the chat button in the main Magician screen, when you have highlighted a Parts request/response from another dealer.

Another is to use the Address Book. See Address Book functionality below.

Clicking on the Chat button will open up a new window that allows you to chat and send instant messages between yourself and the dealer in question.

The window title bar shows "Parts Magician Chat Session - Test Public #2". It displays who you are chatting with in this window.

Instant Message Chat

To send a voice chat message, type in the message you want to send then press the ENTER key on your keyboard. This will send the message to the other dealer.

Messages you type in a indicated in black while messages the other dealer types in are indicated in blue.

In the above example, Test Public #2 initiated the conversion by sending us the message "G'Day Test one. So you are looking for a camshaft". Then we have responded with "Thats right. For a service job". And so on.

Voice Chat

To Start a Voice Chat Session. Click on the Call button.  A ring tone will start playing on both you and the remote dealers speaker/phone.

To establish the voice chat call, the person you called needs to click on the Answer button. Once a call is established, you can both talk to one another.

You can now chat freely. Spk: and Mic: indicate the recorded speaker and microphone levels respectively. In order to change speaker volume/ microphone sensitivity you will need to use the Windows Volume Control. It is typically located in the system tray on your desktop (bottom right of your whole screen).

Either you or the remote dealer can end the call by clicking on the Hangup button.

Both chat and instant messaging can be performed simultaniously. So while you are chatting with another dealer you can also send/receive instant messages, even to other dealers.

Address Book

The address book allows you to keep an address book of dealers that you deal with regularily. The main benefit of having an address book is that it allows you to start a chat session with another dealer, even when that dealer hasn't sent you a parts request/response.

To access the address book goto Tools/Address Book from the Main Parts Magician Screen. From the address book you can search parts magician for Dealer names, view dealer details and start a chat session with other dealers.

Setting Up and Diagnosing Voice Chat

From the main Parts Magician Screen you can access voice chat settings by going to File -> Settings. Then within the Settings dialog box, select the Voice Chat tab:

Normally, you will not need to change voice chat settings, except for the following conditions:

1. You want to disable voice chat and stop other dealers from calling you.
2. Your voice chat is not working

To disable voice chat, uncheck the Enable Voice Chat check box.

If your voice chat is not working, (for example you can hear other dealers but they cannot hear you) it is likely that your hardware is misconfigured. You can test your chat hardware by Clicking on the loopback test button. This button will record your voice and play it back to you a fraction of a second later. If you cannot hear your played back voice you may have a hardware misconfiguration issue. Get your local computer supplier to look into it.
